The new Mercedes-AMG A45 engine
The next generation of the Mercedes 2.0 litre AMG engine for the A45 ups the ante in the Hot Hatch game, delivering up to 415bhp in ‘S’ guise.
It’s been thought for some time that when Mercedes reveals the new generation of A 45 models – and CLA 45 and GLA 45 and GLB 45… – they would come with more than 400bhp. And they do.Mercedes-AMG has now revealed their new 2.0 litre engine for the A 45 et al, and, in ‘S’ guise’, it will deliver an almost unbelievable 415bhp from its 2.0 litre displacement, making it the most powerful four-cylinder production engine there is.
True, the standard offering for the A45 comes with ‘only’ 382bhp and 354lb/ft of torque, but in S guise that goes up to 415bhp and 369lb/ft of torque, and both look, on paper, to perform more like a naturally aspirated engine rather than a heavily boosted one.
Peak torque arrives at around 5,000rpm and peak power in the S at 7,750rpm, so rather than peaking and flatlining when the boost kicks in – like the last A45 – this one promises to have a rising rush as speed increases.
Tobias Moers, AMG boss, said:
We already set the benchmark in the segment with the preceding engine. This fundamentally new four-cylinder presented us with the challenge of doing even better. And we succeeded with a number of sometimes revolutionary solutions. With the M 139, we have once again impressively demonstrated the engine expertise of Mercedes-AMG. Not only is the output per litre unrivalled for a turbocharged engine, the high level of efficiency also demonstrates that the internal combustion engine still has further potential.
Expect new on the new Mercedes-AMG A 45 – and the rest – before long.
