The readers of Auto Bild – in an outbreak of mass xenophobia – have voted the Mercedes SLS AMG the most attractive car in Europe.
Auto Bild has readers of its magazines across 21 European countries. So even though they are a German magazine you might reasonably expect that any German xenophobia would be tempered by a balance from other countries in Europe picking their own national favourite cars. But it seems not.
The Mercedes SLS AMG has been voted the most attractive car in Europe by Auto Bild’s readers. Now we have no big gripe with the aesthetics of the SLS – it’s not a bad looking car in a very derivative way. Hardly original, but a decent updating of the original 300 SL Gullwing of the ’50s, rather than the pastiche it could so easily have been.
But the most attractive car in Europe? Come on. Not even the SLS owners we know – and that includes more than one German (well, one German and an Austrian) – think it’s the best looking car in Europe. Have any of the readers of Auto Bild seen an Aston Martin? Any Aston Martin. And although Ferrari’s design is not actually at the top of its beauty curve at the moment we’d rather look at a 458 Italia than an SLS.
Still, I suppose each to their own. But being partisan is one thing – being blind is quite another.
