New Audi A4 goes on sale this week
The new Audi A4 – revealed in June – goes on sale in the UK on 10 September 2015, costing from £25,900 for the A4 1.4 TFSI to £40,350 for the A4 Avant 3.0 V6 TDI quattro.
It’s more than two months since Audi revealed the new A4 – ahead of a public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show – but with the A4 due to go on sale in the UK this week, Audi has released full details of price and specification.Despite looking like a subtle facelift of the old A4, the new A4 is quite a different car, sitting on the MLB Evo Platform and offering more space, better performance and less weight, and with prices starting from £25,900, the A4 goes head-to-head with the BMW 3 Series (from £24,975), the Mercedes C-Class (from £27,665) and the new Jaguar XE (from £26,990).
Engine choices for the A4 are three turbo petrols, two four-pot turbo diesels and two V6 diesels which, say Audi, are up to 21 per cent more economical and 25 per cent more powerful.
A new 1.4 litre turbo petrol offers 148bhp – a chunk more than the 1,8 litre it replaces – and averages 57.7mpg, despite which the little petrol turbo can hustle to 62mph in 8.9 seconds.
Also on offer are a pair of 2.0 litre petrols, reworked to deliver 187bhp or 248bhp, with the more powerful getting to 62mph in 5.8 seconds with economy of 49.6mpg.
Despite the real appeal of Audi’s petrol-engined offerings, it will be the diesel-engined A4s that will be the big sellers in the UK.
The 2.0 litre TDI comes with either 148bhp or 187bhp, with performance of 0-62mph in 8.6s and 7.7 s and economy of 74.3mpg and 68.9mpg respectively. There will also be an A4 Ultra version with the 2.0 litre vTDI which gets aerodynamic tweaks and low rolling resistance tyres resulting in an Eco A4 emitting under 100g/km.
Top of the diesel tree is the 3.0 V6 TDI offering either 218bhp or 272bhp and economy that looks impressive at 67.3mpg for the 218bhp version.
Thankfully, Audi has purged its range of the woeful Multitronic gearbox, so gearbox options are now a seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic, six-speed manual and an eight-speed auto on the most powerful diesel. Four-wheel-drive quattro is standard on the range-topping A4 3.0 TDI with the rest of the range getting front-wheel-drive, although you can opt for quattro drive on the 248bhp TSI and 187bhp TDI models.
The usual model specs remain, with a choice of SE, Sport and S Line, with prices starting from £25,900 for the A4 1.4 TFSI up to £40,350 for the A4 Avant 3.0 V6 TDI quattro
