New Ford Edge SUV revealed – and it’s heading for the UK

The 2015 Ford Edge has been revealed as a BMW X3-sized SUV based on the Mondeo platform and set to join the Kuga and EcoSport in Ford’s SUV range in the UK.

The new Ford Edge – new to the UK, but already in Ford’s model range in the US – has been revealed as Ford’s big hope to cash in on the still growing obsession with SUVs of all shapes and sizes in the UK.

A big brother to the new Fiesta-based EcoSport and the longstanding Ford Kuga, the new Ford Edge rides on underpinnings that started out as the new Mondeo (well, new to the UK when it finally arrives in the Autumn) and owes its looks, more or less, to the Ford Edge Concept we saw at the LA Auto Show last year.

Just like the Edge Concept, the new Ford edge comes with a big statement grill and big alloys, LED lights all round and a choice of three trim levels – Trend, Sport and Titanium – with more than a fighting chance that Ford will add a Vignale version too.

The hope is that the Edge will steal customers for cars like the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and even the Evoque, with a range-topping Vignale option the best method – Ford believes – to achieve that.

Power will come from Ford’s 2.0 litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine with either 188 bhp and a six-speed manual ‘box or 207bhp and a six-speed auto complete with four wheel drive.

Prices for the new Ford Edge haven’t been revealed, but we’d expect it to start around £30,000 and rise to over £40,000 if there’s a Vignale version in the mix.

Will the Ford Edge be a big seller for Ford in the UK? Ford really hasn’t had any luck taking sales from Premium makers, but the Edge could have a chance. It’ll be competent and able, well-built and easy to drive. But will that be enough?
