Mazda Takeri Concept previews the 2013 Mazda6

Mazda are to reveal the Takeri Concept at the Tokyo Motor Show which previews the new Mazda 6, due in 2013.

The Mazda Takeri Concept Mazda are going to debut at the Tokyo Motor Show next month is the first public step towards the new Mazda 6, and the second instalment of Mazda’s new SKY technology wrapped up in a car heading for production, the first being the new C-X5, which will also be on Mazda’s stand at Tokyo.

The Takeri features Mazda’s latest design language – KODO Soul of Motion – which is less of a caricature than Mazda’s current cartoon face designs.

But the key to the new Mazda6 / Takeri is the SKYACTIV technology.

Underpinning the Takeri will be the lighter and stiffer Sky Activ platform, a clever steel spaceframe platform which comprises small panels which can be scaled to work on just about anything across the Mazda range.

Under the bonnet will be Mazda’s new Sky Activ engines, which are lighter, cleaner and greener. The Takeri Concept gets the Sky Activ-D 2.2 litre turbo diesel, which comes with 173bhp, 310lb/ft of torque and has emissions as low as 104g/km.

There’s a new regenerative braking system on offer too, which converts kinetic energy to electricity and stores it in capacitors which can then be used to power the car’s electrics, thus saving load on the engine and reducing fuel consumption.

The new Mazda 6 will also get the Mazda i-stop system (yet another moniker for stop-start) and a new torque converter and auto ‘box which is both light and efficient – it offers economy on a par with a manual.

Mazda’s ‘Theme’ for the Tokyo Motor Show is clear, if not exactly concise:

Environmental Technology, Pushing the Boundaries of the Emotion of Motion.  As long as there are people who love to drive, Mazda will continue to evolve the emotion of motion in harmony with environmental and safety performance.

But despite the verbosity in that statement, the new Mazda 6 / Mazda Takeri seems to fit the bill admirably.
