New Porsche Macan Revealed: Los Angeles Auto Show (video)

The new Porsche Macan has been revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show with a choice of three engines. On sale now price from £43,300.

The Porsche Macan has been revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show, although Porsche’s endless teases for the baby Cayenne mean we already know much of what’s on offer in the Cayenne.

The styling is very much ‘Baby Cayenne’, and no one is going to think the Macan is anything other than a smaller Porsche SUV with its very familiar looks.

The Macan is smaller than the Cayenne – 146mm shorter and 16mm narrower – but it is bigger than the Audi Q5 on which it’s based (70mm longer and 24mm wider – lower too by 30mm).

Despite the basics from the Q5 contributing to the Macan’s basic structure, Porsche has widened the tracks and added unique components to the double wishbone and rear multi-link suspension to create a car Porsche say will be the best in class by far.

The launch line-up for the Macan consists of the Macan S Diesel at £43,300, Macan S at £43,300 and the Macan Turbo at £59,300.

The new Porsche developed twin turbo 3.6 litre V6 in the Macan Turbo delivers 394bhp and 405lb/ft of torque and will get the Macan to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 168mph.

The Macan S gets a Porsche 3.0 litre twin-turbo V6 which comes with 335bhp and 339lb/ft of torque, enough to get to 62mph in 5.4 seconds and on to 158mph.

The Macan Diesel S uses an Audi 3.0 litre V6 turbo diesel to provied 254bhp and 427lb/ft of torque which will get to 62mph in 6.3 seconds (although the healthy torque will probably make it feel quicker) and on to a top speed of 143mph. Porsche are claiming economy of 46.3mpg for the Macan Diesel.

There will be more engines on offer as the Macan range matures, including 2.0 litre petrol and diesel engines and a Macan Hybrid.

All the Macan models come with a PDK gearbox and an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch system 4WD which offers rear-biased handling as standard but which can, if required, send 100 per cent of the drive to the front wheels. The Macans also get an off-road mode.

It’s a strong offering from Porsche, at prices that go head-to-head with the Range Rover Evoque. It’s not as stylish as the Evoque, but as a driver’s and performance car it will no doubt best the Land Rover offering on-road and still makie a decent fist of off-roading.

The new Porsche Macan is now on sale with first deliveries expected in the UK in March 2014.
