Now Volvo has its new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), and its new Drive-E engine range, heading for production they’ve been planning three new concepts to show off the possibilities the new architecture and engines promise.
With stunning looks, a new nose evolved from the earlier Concept You, floating grill and slim headlights, the Concept Coupe also came with a 4WD drivetrain powered by a 2.0 litre petrol and an electric motor for an output of 395bhp.
Next up was a preview of the 2015 Volvo XC90 in the guise of the Volvo Concept XC Coupe which demonstrated that the new platform could be just as applicable to an SUV as a Coupe.
Now Volvo are promising the third in the series of concepts to showcase their new platform and engines at Geneva. But what is it?
Volvo are giving no clues away at this stage, although logic tells us that having demonstrated SPA can do SUVs and Coupe this one should be a saloon or estate.
That means we could get a taste of the next generation S60/V60 – a car that’s been with us for four years – or perhaps even a bigger saloon, a replacement for the now eight year old Volvo S80.
With China in mind, a preview of the next generation S80 might be the most likely, or even a car to sit above the S80 and take on cars like the Mercedes S Class and BMW 7 Series after Geely and Volvo Chairman, Li Shufu, declared that was an aim.
We’ll find out more as Geneva approaches.
