Nissan Qashqai steering wheel falls off: Recall

Nissan are recalling a number of Qashqai, Qashqai+2 and NV200 vans in the UK after the steering wheel fell of a Qashqai in Finland.

As problems with cars go, having the steering wheel fall off in your hands is not one you need to be a mechanic to diagnose.

That’s exactly what happened to a Nissan Qashqai driver in  Finland who found his steering wheel had parted company with the steering column when he was parking his car. Fortunately, it was a low speed parking manoeuvre and there was no damage done.

It appears that one of Nissan’s suppliers changed a part and there’s a small batch of Qashqais floating round UK roads that could have the same problem. So Nissan are doing a voluntary recall of possibly affected cars to fix the issue.

The problem affects  Qashqai, Qashqai +2 and NV200 vans built between February 27th and May 16th this year and Nissan are contacting owners of models affected to arrange an inspection and a fix – free of charge.

A Nissan spokesperson said:

Nissan is conducting a Voluntary Recall Campaign on approximately 7,376 Qashqai, Qashqai+2 and NV200 models in the UK, following concerns about the strength of the steering wheel.

The steering wheel will be checked to see if it is one of a batch which is affected. If necessary the wheel will be replaced. The operation will take less than 20 minutes. We will be contacting affected customers, but anyone who is concerned about their vehicle should contact their dealer.
