Peel P50 and Trident back in production – the world’s smallest car

Top Gear fans will probably remember Jeremy Clarkson taking the Peel P50 – billed as the world’s smallest car ever – for a trolley round London and the BBC (we’ve published the video below to remind you).

Now, with the world obsessed with small cars, a bunch of businessmen – backed by former Dragons’ Den Dragon James Caan – are putting the Peel P50 and Trident back in to production.

The Peel P50 and the Peel Trident (the ‘Sporty’ Peel) both cost the same, £6,995, and come with a choice of three powerplants (if using the word ‘power’ in this context is accurate).

There’s a 49cc petrol engine with 3.35bhp that can hit 45mph and do 157mpg. But if you’re feeling ‘Green’ you can have one of two electric versions of the Peel, either a 4.08bhp which can hit 50mph and do 50 miles on a charge, or the ‘Fun’ version that has a whopping 1.36bhp, manages 12mph and 30 miles on a charge.

Power is only relevant when you look at size and weight, so at just 54″ long (Trident 72″), and 41″ wide (Trident 42″) and weighing in at between 130lbs and 218lbs, the Peel won’t be quite as arthritic as you may have imagined. But it won’t exactly fly.

If you want one of the launch models – Peel are only making 50 – you’d better be quick as there are only a handful left.
