The Polestar 1 has been revealed as Polestar’s first new car as it stands alone from Volvo, and it’s a stunning 600PS take on the Volvo Concept Coupe.
Polestar – Volvo’s now stand alone Performance brand – has been teasing its first car for a while, and now it’s official – the Polestar 1.
Before you get too excited – and it is worth getting excited about the Polestar 1 – the downside is you won’t be able to buy one – it’ll be Volvo’s new pet game of ‘Subscription’ – it won’t arrive until 2019 and you can only have one in LHD, even in the UK. All of which is rather a shame.
Still, to focus on the good stuff, it looks very much like the exceptional Volvo Concept Coupe, it comes with a 592bhp (600PS) Twin Engine Hybrid Drivetrain and four wheel drive.
Under the bonnet is Volvo’s 2.0 litre petrol engine with turbo and supercharging for 377bhp to the front wheels, and a pair of electric motors on the back wheels chucking in another 215bhp. When both are playing hard there’s also 737lb/ft of torque to play with.
But Polestar hasn’t just fitted a monster hybrid powertrain, it’s also fettled the stuff that matters too, with Ohlins Continuously Controlled Electronic Suspension, carbon fibre body and torque vectoring.
But despite the promise of terrific performance, Polestar say the ‘1’ will also have an EV only range of getting on for 100 miles – which will be very useful, even if it’s more like 70 miles in the real world.
There are no performance or economy figures available for the Polestar 1 yet, although it’s likely to be able to hit 62mph in under 4 seconds, and if you’re prepared to plug it in every night you should see impressive economy too.
Next up from Polestar will be an electric competitor for the Tesla 3 and an electric SUV – catchily named Polestar 2 and Polestar 3 – and all future Polestar cars will be BEVs.
Despite the Polestar 1 not arriving until 2019, Polestar are taking orders from today. So if you don’t mind it being LHD and not being able to buy it, you know what to do. But be warned – Polestar are planning to build just 500 a year.
