Porsche are reported to be working on a smaller version of the Panamera – dubbed Panamera Junior or Porsche Pajun – for launch in 2016.
Porsche gave traditionalists heart failure when they launched the Porsche Cayenne almost a decade ago. But it turned in to the biggest cash-cow Porsche had ever made.
Having see-off a chunk of Porsche traditionalists with the Cayenne, Porsche then conspired to gave those still left apoplexy by delivering to the world a big, bloated four-door saloon – the Porsche Panamera. Which has already turned in to another huge cash-cow for Porsche.
But that’s not going to be enough for Porsche. They see the world and his dog looking at smaller, more frugal cars. They also see a potential market for those looking to trade down in size but not in performance or quality. Which is why the Cayenne Junior is on the way – the Porsche Cajun.
And, you shouldn’t be shocked to learn, we are almost certainly going to see the Panamera Junior too – the Porsche Pajun.
Auto Bild are reporting that Porsche already has work on the Pajun underway and are planning on offering a similar set of powertrains to the Panamera. So we can expect to see everything from a V6 to a diesel to a hybrid to a V8. All wrapped up in a scaled-down, lighter and nimbler Panamera. Which sounds rather appealing.
This may just be a punt of a story by Auto Bild on a slow news week. But even if it is, it’s almost certain to have hit a lot of accidental truths on the way.
Porsche is a money-making machine and the most profitable car maker of any size by a long way, and they’re not going to miss the chance to add to their revenue by producing a 5-Series challenging Porsche to suit the needs of the market.
Auto Bild say 2016. We’d bet on sooner.
