Skoda Fabia Scout image and details

February 19, 2009 By Cars UK

You’d never guess we’re coming up to a major Euro Motor Show, would you?!

Skoda has released details and pictures of the new Skoda Fabia Scout to an expectant public (!) today. But it’s hard to get too excited. On the face of it you expect this to be a rufty-tufy estate, in the mould of the Audi A4 Allroad quattro or the Saab 9-3X. Chunky bits added (plastic, in this case) and a raised ride-height bring expectations of a rugged little estate car that will do ‘Soft-Roading’ quite well. But if that’s what you thought as well, then you’re going to be disappointed.

In fact, despite it’s appearance, the Skoda Fabia Scout can’t really walk-the-walk. Sure, its raised ride height and its add-on protection will make the school run a wee bit simpler. But without even a rudimentary AWD system it’s hard to see what the market will be. Depending on price (Skoda haven’t told us yet) maybe it will appeal to those who want style over substance. And we can’t dispute how well-made Skodas are these days, or what value for money they usually represent compared to the equivalent VW model.

But a few details, as that’s what you’d expect: A choice of four engines at launch, two diesel and two petrol. A 1.4 and a 1.6 petrol, with 85bhp and 105bhp respectively. The diesel choice is 1.4 or 1.9 with 80bhp and 105bhp. Lots of ‘Scout’ logos and a hard-wearing inside with stainless steel pedals and bits of rubber. Standard lightweight alloys are 16 inch, or you can opt for 17 inch.

Due in UK Car Showrooms in May, the Skoda Fabia Scout seems a little underwhelming.

cynical marketing. Surely Skoda could do it properly with four wheel drive. Why?!
