The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 has been revealed as a huge 2+2 luxury coupe with a 738bhp electric powertrain, previewing a future Maybach luxury coupe.
We knew there was an extreme coupe concept coming from Mercedes-Maybach after a tease or two appeared in recent weeks, and this – the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 – is the reality. In the same mould as the Maybach Excelero Concept of 2004, the Vision 6 looks like a 1940s take on a gigantic luxury coupe of the future, with swooping curves and no sense of the practical (although Mercedes say it’s an “…homage to the glorious age of the aero coupés”), but is underpinned by a very modern, and very powerful, electric powertrain.
Although not likely to be exactly previewing a new Mercedes-Maybach model, it clearly signals Mercedes’ intent to deliver an extreme coupe, no doubt with an extreme price, to take the fight to Rolls Royce, especially as the target currently is just the Ghost-based Wraith, with the range-topping Phantom Coupe now out of production.
The Vision 6 Maybach is all long lines and swoopiness, with a big chrome grill digging in to Maybach’s past, slim LED headlights, enormous bonnet, Gullwing doors and 24″ alloys. In fact, every element a concept car needs to make an impact.
Inside, the Vision Maybach 6 is equally bonkers, with wraparound dashboard and seats which look more impressive than cosseting – and which monitor your vital functions – and can seat four in a 2+2 layout and. of course, delivers completely autonomous driving when needed.
But what’s under the bonnet is probably more interesting – and a clearer indication of where Mercedes-Maybach’s future powertrains are going – with a new Modular Electric Architecture featuring a flat floor to store the Maybach’s 80kWh lithium-ion batteries.
The batteries supply power to four electric motors – two at the front and two at the back – delivering 738bhp and 0-62mph of under 4.0 seconds, as well as a range of 300 miles on a charge, and the ability to quick-charge a 60 mile range in just five minutes.
Proper Tesla-competing numbers, and clearly pointing at what Mercedes has to come in the way of powerful EV powertrains.
The 18′ 8″ Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 will be dominating Mercedes’ stand at Pebble Beach. If you’re going, we think it might be quite hard to miss.
