Defeat Device – 5 MILLION VW-badged cars affected
As the VW defeat device saga rumbles on, Volkswagen has announced that there are five million VW-badged cars on the roads which scammed emissions.
It’s been a week of endless revelations on the VW defeat device scam – where VW used clever software to produce lower emissions during official tests – from the initial revelation that half a million cars in the US were using the device to the admission that 11 million cars worldwide were on the road with falsified emissions certification. We’ve also learnt that VW has sold 2.8 million cars in Germany with the device, and now we learn that there are five million VW-badged cars on the road around the world with the EA 189 engine which have emissions that were scammed in official tests.
That still leaves another six million cars affected, no doubt from SEAT, Skoda and Audi, with the possibility still looming that VW’s V6 TDi, as fitted in Porsche and Audi cars too, is in the frame.
VW’s statement said:
The internal evaluation revealed that approximately five million Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand vehicles are affected worldwide. Certain models and model years of these vehicles (such as the sixth generation Volkswagen Golf, the seventh generation Volkswagen Passat and the first generation Volkswagen Tiguan) are equipped exclusively with type EA 189 diesel engines.
As previously announced, all new Volkswagen Passenger Car brand vehicles that fulfill the EU6 norm valid throughout Europe are not affected. This therefore also includes the current Golf, Passat and Touran models.
No doubt, in the coming days and weeks, we’ll start to discover how far beyond these five million VW cars the defeat device scam went.

Curtis says
Well at least no one has died or has been injured like GM or Toyotas recalls and they are all on the road Vw makes good cars emissions will have to be corrected simple as that
Cars UK says
True – to a point. But it won’t take lawyers long to claim that NOx and particulate emissions up to 40 times the certified levels has caused ‘X’ numbers of additional deaths.
