We really rate the VW Scirocco. It’s everything a small coupe should be. It’s very stylish, extremely well-built and fun to drive. We wrote about the new VW Scirocco GT TDI a few days ago, which offers all the style and fun of its siblings, but wrapped up with terrific economy. But next to be revealed is the VW Scirocco R20T, which is due to be revealed next week at the Nurburgring.
I suppose we should consider this a ‘Tease’ from VW, because the photo we have here appears to be a track-prepared version of the new hot Scirocco, but it’s not. It is actually a full production model with a stack of track logos splatted on it. Our snapper says it was a fully trimmed car with a full road car interior. So just a way of teasing but, ignoring the stickers, this is the new Scirocco R20T.
VW plans to unveil the Scirocco R20T at the Nurburgring 24hr Race on 21st May. It will feature VW’s 2.0 litre lump, apparently tuned to deliver 270bhp. Which should give this hot Scirocco a decent amount of oomph. But there are rumours that VW has managed to coax near on 300bhp from the Audi S3 lump, which if true will make it a very hard car to match. But even with ‘Just’ 270bhp it should manage a 0-60mph time of under 6.0 seconds and come in at around £25,000 in the UK.
The R20T appears to get a butch, but subtle, body make-over, indicator lights merged in to the headlights, a bigger rear spoiler and big, fat twin exhausts. A nice looking job that makes the Scirroco look much more aggressive, without spoiling the inherent design.
We’re big fans of the Scirroco. Looks like the Scirocco R20T is shaping up to be a winner.
