I do like the Volkswagen Scirocco. I liked it when they produced the ‘Storm’ back in the ’70s, and I think the latest version is a great car, even if I would like to see a Scirocco with the same sort of cache as the Storm had back then.
But today frugality is the key and, if you can couple it with a fair degree of style and some half-decent performance, you should be on to a winner. VW thinks so, and has announced that the VW Scirroco GT TDI 170PS is now available in the UK, with prices starting at £21,755 OTR.
This GT TDI is a frugal car and, with a combined figure of 53.3mpg and emissions of 139g/km Co2, you’d rather expect it to be a frugal eco-box that struggled away from the lights. But this Scirocco, with its 258lbs/ft of torque, will despatch the 0-60 sprint in a pretty impressive 8.0 seconds, and on to 138mph.
Despite its frugal nature, the trim levels are pretty reasonable too. Two-zone aircon comes as standard, as do rain and light sensors and a decent CD multichanger. The usual safety toys are present – EPS, ASB and a raft of airbags – and the Scirocco GT TDI also gets VW’s ACC (Adaptive Damper Control) which allows you to select normal, comfort or sport for the dampers, which are stiffened accordingly by the pneumatic system. You also get the choice of a six-speed manual ‘box or VW’s excellent DSG ‘box. Pick the DSG.
Good car this. Stylish, fun to drive and pretty economical.
