Has Aston Martin axed the Cygnet?

A report suggests that Aston Martin has axed the Cygnet – the city car based on the Toyota iQ – after just 2 years.

There was a certain logic to the Aston Martin Cygnet. After all, makers of luxury and supercars do need to find a way to trim their average Co2 emissions across their range, and there’s a potential market for a pretend Aston Martin for ‘er indoors.

But the problem with the Aston Martin Cygnet was always that it was just a Toyota iQ with Aston Martin bits bolted on, and a price that starts at £32k before you start on the options list.

We actually have no idea how many Cygnets Aston Martin has actually sold, but according to Supercar Kids Aston Martin is ready to give up on the Cygnet after just over 2 years in production and won’t be building any more.

The Aston Martin Cygnet first arrived as a concept in 2009, and by the time Aston Martin revealed the launch edition of the Cygnet in 2011 it was clear Aston saw the Cygnet as having great potential. They even sold one to Stirling Moss for ‘er indoors.

But whatever hopes Aston had for the Cygnet, they seem to have come to nothing with the news that Cygnet production is to end. Apparently there are still a number of Cygnets in stock at Aston Martin dealers (there’s a shock) so if you’re desperate to have a Toyota iQ dressed up as a baby Aston Martin you’re still in luck – but not for much longer.

What a shame.
