2012 BMW X1 Facelift

The entire BMW X1 range has been given something of a facelift for 2012, but BMW hasn’t just titivated the cosmetics they’ve also introduced two new models – the X1 Sport and X1 xLine – and new diesel engines.

Cosmetic changes include more painted and less plastic surfaces outside, new headlights (with white LED corona rings if you spec the X1 with Xenons), more prominent underguard at the back (for added butchness), new alloys and some new paint options. Inside the 2012 X1 receives minor trim tweaks to the centre console with an emphasis on higher perceived quality. Which won’t go amiss.

BMW has also added two new models to the X1 range with the arrival of the X1 Sport and X1 xLine.

The BMW X1 Sport gets bigger bumpers and side skirts and a gloss black grill and black chrome exhausts tailpipes. The sports seats get a flash of ‘sporty’ red, there’s some ‘sporty alloys’ and ‘sporty’ red flashes with black gloss highlights in the cabin.

The BMW X1 xLine gets 18″ alloys and a chrome finish for the grille slats and tailpipes. Side sills, roof rails and exterior trim sections get an aluminium finish whilst the interior gets Nevada leather with Dark Copper interior trim and a dose of ambient lighting.

All the engine options on the 2012 are basically the 2.0 litre diesel in various states of tune with TwinPower Turbo. For the sDrive18d, xDrive18d, sDrive20d and xDrive20d, TwinPower means variable intake geometry and torque outputs for better efficiency.

Entry pont for the 2012 X1 is the sDrive18d SE in RWD and xDrive18d SE for 4WD with an optional six-speed auto, with the rest of the range getting an 8-speed auto. The sDrive20d SE and xDrive20d SE now get 181bhp from the 2.0 litre diesel with official figures of 58mpg and 129g/km.

Top of the tree is now the  xDrive25d which will come only in the new xLine and M Sport trim. It manages 214bhp from its 2.0 litre with a 0-62mph of 6.8 seconds, does 48mpg and emits 154g/km.

The 2012 BMW X1 range goes on sale in the UK in July.
