The 2012 Porsche 911 - grows in size
The 2012 Porsche 911 will be bigger than the current 911 and get a smaller entry-level 3.4 litre Boxer lump to help economy and emissions.
It’s always the same when a new Porsche 911 comes along; it’s ‘spot-the-change’ time as Porsche reveals another evolution in the long history of its most iconic marque.
So with a new 911 due in 2012 it’s perfectly reasonable to expect some nips and tucks to the body and a fettling of the oily bits to drag a bit more performance a bit more economically. Nothing too dramatic; just another chapter in the 911’s evolution. But actually, there’s a bit more in store for the 2012 911.
Auto Bild are reporting that the 2012 Porsche 911 is set to get bigger. Not massively so – longer by 2.2 inches – but that’s quite significant in what is a far from big car. The 2012 911 will also get lower – by about half an inch – and, in Carrera S guise, have bulging arches at the back which add 2.5 inches to the girth.
Things are also set to change on the oily front, with the entry-level lump dropping from 3.6 litres to 3.4 litres. The new 345bhp 3.4 litre Boxer engine will give the 911 better economy and emissions figures – it is said a 13% improvement in economy – than the old 3.6 litre. But despite its reduced capacity it is said to do the 62mph sprint in 4.8 seconds and 180mph.
The Carrera S models will get a revised 3.8 litre Boxer engine with 395bhp and a 14% improvement in economy. The Carrera S will manage 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds and 188mph.
Expect the 2012 Porsche 911 to make its debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show next September.
