The 2016 facelift for the Porsche 911 has been previewed with a raft of photos from Porsche of prototype 2016 911s testing in South Africa, Debuts Frankfurt 2015.
The 2016 Porsche 911 will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, with a cosmetic facelift – inside and out – and, we’re expecting, downsized engines with turbos to replace the lack of capacity. But this is Porsche, and even an all-new 911 doesn’t look that different, so we have to look quite hard to see what Porsche has tweaked for 2016 – although the little bits of sticky tape on some of the updated portions points us in the right direction.
As you’d expect, the bumpers come in for a tweak, as do the headlights and running lights, with small tweaks to the tail lights, different slats on the engine cover and tail pipes that have moved closer together.
Inside, the 911 gets the steering wheel from the 918 (just as every new Porsche seems to), complete with driving mode selector, Porsche’s latest PCM and, no doubt, some tweaks to the trim, materials and colours on offer.
But the big news – which these photos don’t show – is the arrival of smaller engines for the 911, but smaller engines with turbos to make up for the lower capacity.
The existing 3.4 and 3.8 litre engines will be replaced by smaller units, with the Carrera expected to get a turbo 2.7 litre with around 400bhp and the Carrera S a 3.4 litre turbo with more power than the current 3.8 litre unit.
With a debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September is seems likely Porsche will deliver all the details on the new 911 during the ‘no news’ August period.
More then.
