The 2017 International Engine of the Year Awards has seen Ferrari win for the second year in a row with the 3.9 litre V8 from the Ferrari 488.
This year’s overall winner is Ferrari’s glorious 3.9 litre V8 – found in the 488 – which has won the best engine award for the second year on the trot.
Ferrari is only the fourth car maker to win the double – previous double winners are BMW M’s V10 and 3.0 litre twin turbo, VW’s 1.4 TwinCharger and Ford’s 1.0 Ecoboost – and Porsche managed to beat the Porsche 3.0 Turbo in the 911 in to second place.
But the IEOTY Awards also recognise engines by category, and there are plenty of gongs to go around for the world’s best engines, including Tesla winning for their ‘Engine’ in the Model S and X in the ‘Green’ and ‘Electric’ categories.
Other notable engines to win include Peugeot’s 1.2 litre three-cylinder turbo found in a number of PSA’s models, Ford’s 1.0 litre Ecoboost, Porsche’s 2.0 litre turbo in the 718 and BMW’s 1.5 litre three-pot in the i8.
The ICE engine is still alive and kicking.

- 1.4-Litre to 1.8-Litre: BMW 1.5-litre three-cylinder from the i8
- 1-Litre to 1.4-Litre: PSA Peugeot Citroen 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo (various)
