In the looks department the Peugeot 5008 is one of the better looking MPVs on the market. Peugeot have done a very good job of hiding the 5008’s bulk around cleverly designed lines, and the nose no longer looks the abomoination served up on many Peugeot’s in the last few years.

But it’s the interior that wins the award for us. Yes, there are one or two bits that seemed a bit cost-cutting, but you can’t argue with the clever design. There are seemingly endless places to stow anything you could want to stow, the only problem being remembering where you stowed it. The second row of seats – three individual seats – perform a vast array of moving tricks from fully up and backwards and forwards to fully flat and stowed.

Even the third row of seats – often an afterthought designed for legless adults or deformed children – are more than usable and when they’re stowed – and you’re left with a flat floor – there’s ample luggage space (800 litres rising to 2500 litres with the second row stowed).

The view from the driver’s seat is good and the dash and centre console are well laid out. You even get a heads-up display which gives you the basics on a perspex rectangle that glides out when you start the car. This is the 5008 Exclusive trim so there’s no shortage of toys including the huge glass roof which makes the interior light and airy.

Fortunately, the 5008 gets AirCon even in basic spec and Climate in the Exclusive, so when the sun starts a beating the big glass roof is not an issue. And if the cold air doesn’t work well enough the push of a button sees a full blind roll out to cover the glass.

So the Peugeot 5008 looks good, handles well and the interior is not just a decent place to be but it’s well designed too. Mind you, nothings perfect so we have to find something to moan about.

We find it hard to believe in 2010 that a high-end MPV – for that is what the 5008 Exclusive HDi 110 is – should come without a SatNav as standard, something that every harassed driver with a car full of kids needs. Amazingly, it’ll cost you over £700 to spec it with one.

Which is just plain daft, especially when this particular model has auto lights and wipers, Cruise, Climate, Tyre Pressure Monitor, Parking Sensors and electric everything. Oh, and while we’re at it there are some heavy reflections at times on the big, raked windscreen.

And much beyond that – without getting nit-picking for the sake of it – there is precious little to find fault with in the 5008. It looks good, it’s well thought out and executed and – even in this high spec Exclusive trim – the price is sensible. It’s also economical, offering a real world 45mpg even with all that load-lugging and people-lugging capacity.

But most of all it’s actually good to drive. So even when you have no choice but to make your only drive a family lugging box on wheels you don’t need to completely hibernate your driving Mojo.

Which is enough reason all on its own for buying a Peugeot 5008.
