The MINI Cooper is being recalled over fires
Back in October we reported that the MINI Cooper S was under investigation in the US after a spate of fires. ‘Spate’ may be a bit strong as, at that time, there had been a total of just 12 fires reported. But it seems the reports of fires were increasing and the NHTSA were looking at the cause, especially as 8 of the fires were reported to have started when the MINI was parked and turned off.
It seems that there is a fault in not just the MINI Cooper S, but in all MINI Coopers, where the circuit board on the auxiliary water pumps that cool the turbos can malfunction, causing overheating and a subsequent fire.
In the US, BMW are recalling a total of 88,911 MINI Cooper and MINI Coper S cars built between 2007 and 2011 – a much wider range of build than the original investigation, which was said to be just on cars built in 2007 and 2008.
We don’t yet know if MINI in the UK will be following suit, but we’ll update here as soon as we hear back from them.
