BMW M650d & M750d on the way
The BMW M Division range of cars – the power of ‘M’ with the frugality of diesel – officially arrived at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, offering performance almost on a par with BMW’s M cars but with the joy of frugality when you aren’t in the mood to drive like your hair’s on fire.
The Geneva launch of the M Division saw both the X5 and X6 get the tri-turbo diesel with 376bhp and a huge 545lb/ft of torque – offering 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds – and the M550d which can get to 62mph in an even more impressive 4.7 seconds.
And now it looks like BMW are close to extending the M Division range with plans to offer the meaty tri-turbo in both the 7 Series and 6 Series.
The M650d will be offered as a coupe and convertible and in the Gran Coupe and we’re told to expect a debut at the Paris Motor Show in September.
What we also expect to see at Paris is the 2013 BMW 7 Series, and BMW will use the launch of the facelifted 7 Series to launch the M750d – the closest we’re going to get to an M7. That should mean a sharp 7 Series with a sporty setup, performance on a par with the 760i – 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds – but with a 40mpg average instead of the 760i’s 20mpg.
All of which is very appealing.
