Infiniti Q50 to arrive at Geneva 2013 with ‘European Power’

The new Infiniti Q50 – the Infiniti formerly known as the G37 – will make its European debut at Geneva 2013 with a diesel and turbo petrol option.

As we discovered recently, Infiniti has decided that all its car will now get a ‘Q’ or ‘QX’ moniker, and the first ‘Q’ car to arrive from Nissan’s posh brand is the new Infiniti Q50.

The Infiniti Q50 debuted at the Detroit Auto Show last month and came with the same two engine options the G37 got, namely the 3.7 litre V6 petrol with 323bhp and a 3.5 litre V6 hybrid sporting a total of 355bhp. But that engine lineup isn’t going to be enough to make sales of the new Q50 in Europe, where fuel costs so much more than in Infiniti’s core U.S. market.

So Infiniti are bringing the Q50 to the 2013 Geneva Motor Show for its European debut and will reveal ‘European Power’ for their new car. That means a four-pot petrol turbo and a diesel option.

Infiniti hasn’t yet revealed what engines they will be using in the Q50 for Europe, but we do know they will be coming from Mercedes. That could mean either the Mercedes 2.1 litre diesel which offers around 200 horses in the C 250 CDI or the 3.0 litre V6 diesel from the C 350 CDI which has a more appealing 260 horses.

As for the petrol four cylinder turbo, that could be the Mercedes 2.0 litre turbo with around 209bhp (in the new A Class) unless Mercedes let Infinit loose with the 300bhp plus engine from the new A45 AMG.

We’ll find out by Geneva, but whatever specific engines Infiniti offers for the Q50 in Europe, they will bring in far more sales than a pair of V6 petrols have done for the G37.

Assuming anyone ever gets to know what Infiniti actually has on offer in the UK and Europe, that is.
