Volvo Concept Coupe looks terrific: Frankfurt 2013

The Volvo Concept Coupe – a 21st century take on the iconic P1800 – is revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show as a stunning new Volvo.

It’s only two weeks since Volvo revealed their concept coupe, and we’ve been looking forward to seeing it in the flesh at Frankfurt and see if it looks as good as it does in photos. But it doesn’t – it looks even better.

With a new Volvo nose that is totally convincing with its floating grill and slim headlights to the scallops on the flanks and the C-shaped lights at the back, the Volvo Coupe is not just a cohesive and elegant design, but hugely appealing one too.

We’re still not sure if Volvo are heading in to production with the Coupe (but they most certainly should) but it does serve to illustrate that Volvo has finally started to shake off its Ford shackles and is moving forward in an individual and appealing way.

What the Coupe Concept also does is introduce Volvo’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform which will underpin much of Volvo’s production going forward, including the 2014 Volvo XC90 – the first production Volvo scheduled to use it – and Volvo’s new range of 4-cylinder engines.

Between now and the arrival of the new XC90 next year, Volvo are planning two more concepts to showcase their new design direction, new platform and new engine range.

And if they’re half as appealing as the Coupe Concept, Volvo will be on a roll.
