We’re assuming that the new 2014 Mercedes S 65 AMG will remain the new range-topper for the S-Class, but with Pullman versions of the S-Class still to come – perhaps with the Maybach badge – that’s not a certainty.
We’ve actually already seen a photo of the new S65 AMG back in September when Mercedes were busy filming a promo, but now we get the full details ahead of debut.
With a 6.0 litre V12 producing 621bhp and a massive 737lb/ft of torque, the S 65 AMG has immense power, enough to propel this massive luxo-barge to 62mph in just 4.3 seconds, despite which it manages to return official economy of 23.7mpg, making it the most efficient V12…in the world.
The new S65 also gets AMG’s Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic seven-speed ‘box instead of the old car’s five-speed which gets three driving modes – Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S) and Manual (M).
There’s no doubt the S 65 weighs about the same as a small moon (Mercedes aren’t letting on quite how heavy), but there have been efforts toi mitigate the mass with stuff like a new lightweight lithium-ion battery, lightweight alloy wheels and carbon fibre bonnet.
Cosmetically, the S 65 gets new bumpers, new grill, twin exhausts, front splitter and some ‘S65 BiTurbo’ badging, and the interior goes up a notch or three in luxury and equipment.
The new Mercedes S 65 AMG will go on sale in spring 2014, and will cost around £200,000.
