Aston Martin recall the majority of cars built since 2007

Aston Martin is having to recall three quarters of all the cars they’ve built since 2007 – a total of 17,590 – due to a faulty plastic moulding.

A recall by Aston Martin of 17,590 cars might not seem a big deal when you’ve seen recalls from the likes of Toyota running in to the millions.

But Aston Martin is a small, bespoke make of high-end luxury GTs and Sports cars, and 17,590 cars is three-quarters of all the cars they’ve built since November 2007.

The recall affects all left-hand drive cars built from November 2007 to December 2013 and all right-hand drive cars from May 2012 to December 2013 and is because of some less than kosher plastics in the accelerator pedal. It doesn’t affect the Toyota-built Cygnet and nor, it seems, the new Vanquish.

Aston Martin have been using a Chinese company – Shenzhen Kexiang Mould Tool Co – to produce the parts, and it seems they’ve managed to use counterfeit Du Pont plastics that aren’t up to scratch and increase the chance of the plastic snapping.

It does seem to be a case of unnecessary cost-cutting by Aston who, it appears, are moving supplies of the offending part to a UK supplier.

But the upshot is they’ll have to stump up to replace the offending part with a new one made of proper plastic.

The fix is free of charge and should take less than an hour – although how long it will take AML’s small dealer network to fix all the offending cars isn’t know.
