World Champion Lewis Hamilton is on pole position for the 2015 Malaysian Grand Prix, but it’s Sebastian Vettel in the Ferrari in second, ahead of Nico Rosberg.
Malaysian Grand Prix Qualifying: Hamilton on pole for Mercedes
After the first F1 Grand Prix of 2015 in Australia, it would be reasonable to think that Mercedes will have everything their own way in 2015. Add to that Sebastian Vettel’s moans that Mercedes are just too good, and it’s wrecking F1, and you might be expected to think Malaysia is another one-two on the grid for Mercedes. But it’s not.
Lewis set his pole run in final qualifying at his first attempt, but it took Rosberg more attempts – and a tyre change – to get within 0.463s of him, but Vettel managed to split the Mercedes pair – just 0.074s behind Hamilton.
Behind the top three it’s the Red Bulls of Ricciardo and Kvyat, a brilliant sixth place from the young Max Verstappen in the Toro Rosso, the Williams of Massa and Bottas split by Romain Grosjean (although he will drop 2 places for a pit lane infringement in Q2) in the Lotus in eighth, and last place in final qualifying to Ericsson in the Sauber.
But it was another miserable qualifying for McLaren that was almost as bad as in Australia – even with Alonso back in his car – with Jenson Button managing only 17th place and Alonso 18th.
The 2015 Malaysian Grand Prix could turn out to be an interesting outing, especially if the weather conspires to mix things up.
