The 2016 Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet has been revealed ahead of its debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show in both S500 and S63 AMG guises. On sale early 2016.
Mercedes has been teasing the new S-Class Cabriolet for some time – and we’ve even had a couple of photos of the S-Class Cabriolet with the top down – but now, ahead of its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the S-Class Cabrio gets a proper reveal.Looking far more elegant than a huge, four-seat cabrio has any right to, the new S-Class Cabriolet offers much the same recipe as the S-Class Coupe but with the option to push a button and open the cabin to the sky.
With the roof up the S-Class Cabriolet looks much like the Coupe, but it gets a more steeply rake windscreen, with more substantial frame, and the multi-layer roof – available in black, dark blue, beige and dark red – can be opened or closed in just 20 seconds, and at speeds up to 37mph, and offers an environment much like the Coupe when the roof’s closed thanks to a butyl outer roof covering and double-glazed side windows.
Inside is much like the Coupe – no bad thing – but with Mercedes AirCap on the top of the windscreen to reduce turbulence and the option (really?) of Airscarf to warm your neck. There’s also Thermotronic Climate Control for perfect temperature control, the option of Air Balance and Warmth Comfort Packs and the usual leather options including Nappa and Mercedes Exclusive.
The S-Class Cabrio will initially be offered as the S500 Cabrio with the 4.7 litre V8 with nine-speed auto ‘box or, if you want a bit more get up and go, you can have the Mercedes-AMG S 63 Cabriolet with the twin-turbo 5.5 litre V8 delivering 576bhp and getting to 62mph in just 3.9 seconds. It also seems likely – further down the line – that we’ll also see an S65 Cabriolet.
Mercedes’ Ola Källenius said of the new S-Class Cabriolet:
After 44 years we are once again able to offer Mercedes aficionados an open-top car in the S-Class. The new S-Class Cabriolet symbolises our passion for individual and timelessly exclusive mobility, which we share with our customers.
The new Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet is expected to go on sale in the UK in early 2016.
