New Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet alongside an S-Class Cabriolet W111
Ahead of a debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet is back with another tease, pictured alongside an S-Class Cabriolet W 111.
A couple of weeks ago, we had the first official image of the new Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet – Mercedes’ first S-Class Cabriolet for more than 40 years – as Mercedes ramped up interest in the new S-Class ahead of a debut at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show next month. That image was more render than photo, but this time the S-Class Cabriolet is back in a real photo, pictured alongside the last S-Class Cabriolet Mercedes made – the S-Class Cabriolet W 111.
Just like the image from a couple of weeks ago, this photo of the new Cabriolet is a rear three-quarter view with the top down, showing off a sumptuous interior with four individual seats and a bigger back deck to accommodate what is said to be the largest folding roof on a production car.
Elsewhere will be pretty much S-Class Coupe without the roof, including a choice of the 4.6 litre V8 in the S500 Cabriolet and twin turbo 5.5 litre V8 in the AMG S63 Cabriolet – with the S 65 Cabriolet arriving later – with the choice of at least one 4MATIC 4WD version (although we don’t yet know if that will apply to UK RHD versions).
Price are expected to be in the £100-200k range – depending on model – with sales starting in 2016.
And Mercedes will have to hope that Jeremy Clarkson’s observation that “The only person to ever look good in the back of a big 4-seater convertible was Adolf Hitler” doesn’t limit the S-Class Cabriolet’s market too much.
