Skoda Superb 2.0 TSI 280PS (pictured) is Skoda’s fastest model ever
The Skoda Superb 2.0 TSI 280PS is being promoted by Skoda as the estate car that’s quicker than a supercar. But that is a pretty ancient supercar.
There is no question that the performance of modern cars makes even exceptionally quick cars from 30 years ago look a bit tame.Take something mainstream like a 1970s 3.0 litre Capri – a very quick car in its day – and its straight line performance is matched by a modern 1.0 litre Fiesta, which would also run rings round it on back roads.
Now, Skoda has decided that the pitch for the new Superb 2.0 TSI 280PS – the most powerful production Skoda ever – will be that it’s quicker than a supercar, albeit a quite old supercar.
Available as either a hatch or an estate, the Superb with the 277bhp petrol engine scoots to 62mph in a very respectable 5.8 seconds, a time that makes it quicker than a 1987 Porsche 911 or a 1976 Ferrari 308 GTB.
The Skoda also comes with four-wheel drive and a DSG gearbox, so exploiting the performance is very easy, yet despite the performance the Superb is a properly commodious hatch or even more commodious estate.
To emphasise their pitch, Skoda has put together a video showing the Superb 2.0 TSI 280PS battling supercars including the original Honda NSX and the Lotus Esprit (below). In a straight line, at least.
If Skoda’s pitch for the powerful Superb floats your boat, you can grab a hatch from £31,445 or an estate from £32,745 in SE L Executive, Sport or Laurin & Klement trim.
