Kia Niro EV on the ways
The Kia Niro Hybrid SUV / Crossover looks set to be an expanding range, with an electric Niro EV looking to be firmly on the cards.
It’s a year since the Kia Niro was revealed as Kia’s battle wagon in the hybrid Crossover/SUV sector, but so far it’s a lone model range. There have been rumours for some time that Kia are planning a plug-in hybrid version of the Niro with E-4WD created by an extra motor on the back wheel.
But now, to add to that (more than) a rumour, Kia’s COO in the US, Michael Sprague, has all but admitted to TTAC that a fully electric Niro is on the way.
If course, none of this should coke as much of a surprise as the Kia Niro as, despite its Crossover designation, it is the same under the skin as the Hyundai Ioniq.
The Ioniq, of course, already comes as a regular hybrid (and very good it is too) but also as an EV. Not only that, but the Ioniq will also arrive later this year as a plug-in hybrid, perhaps the most appealing prospect in the range.
With Hyundai pushing out three electrified versions of the Ioniq, it seems inconceivable that Kia would stick at just the one.
Perhaps the Geneva Motor Show next month will see the arrival of the electric Kia Niro.
