Pod Point rolling out 150kW EV Rapid Charging in the UK
Pod Point has announced it is rolling out 150kW EV charging points in the UK, enabling new cars like the Jaguar i-Pace EV SUV to get an 80% charge in under 45 minutes.
The new Jaguar i-Pace is about to get a reveal in production guise, on 1 March 2018, and Jaguar has been keen to tell us that it can be charged to 80 per cent in just 45 minutes. The only trouble was, there are no 150kW EV chargers in the UK to make that possible. But that’s about to change.
Pod Point has announced plans to roll out 150kW charges in the UK, and that will start to happen before the new i-Pace hits the road in the summer.
Currently, most rapid chargers for EVs in the UK can deliver a maximum of 50kW charging – although Tesla’s Supercharger Network can manage 120kW, but only if you own a Tesla – but with more cars with chunky battery packs and the ability to Rapid Charge at higher rates arrive, Pod Point has decided the time has come to deliver what they need.
Erik Fairbairn, Pod Point boss, said:
Access to rapid charging is still vital for those making long journeys, and these high power rapids will be ideal to support the new wave of premium EVs with en-route highway charging. Using our high power 150kW rapids, an EV with a 90kWh battery would be able to charge from flat to 80 per cent in under 30 minutes.
Pod Point are planning to significantly expand its public charging network in 2018 after seeing a 1,000 per cent rise in monthly charge cycles since May, and the new 150kW rapid chargers are a significant part of those plans.
