Cost of replacing the Nissan LEAF's Batteries DROPS 90%

Cost of replacing the Nissan LEAF’s Batteries DROPS 90%

The cost of replacing the batteries in a Nissan LEAF has dropped to just £2,000, thanks to a new Nissan scheme to offer refabricated batteries in Japan.

The price of batteries for electric cars has been such a big part of the cost of an EV that, ignoring range issues, electric cars have struggled to compete against ICE cars.

But as economies of scale – and advances in technology – start to make their mark, battery costs for EVs continue to drop making EVs more affordable, more profitable for car makers and more appealing on the used market.

A good example is the cost of a replacement battery pack for the Nissan LEAF, which cost £20,000 just seven years ago, but which had dropped to £5,000 three years later.

But now, as Nissan in Japan launches a refrabricated battery replacement option with 4R Energy Corp, the price of getting a refabricated 24kWh battery pack drops to just £2,000 – a 90 per cent drop in cost in just seven years.

You can still buy new battery packs from Nissan, with prices (in Japan) for the 24kWh at £4,300, 30kWh at £5,300 and the 40kWh at £5,450. But if, as Nissan are planning, the refabricated battery range is extended to all battery pack sizes, then even a refabricated 40kWh battery pack should cost around £2,500.

You will find it difficult to get a U.K. company to replace your battery, muxsan.com is the company to go to in the Netherlands.
Robert Llewelyn mentioned in one of his bloggs that he will be going there to get his original 24kWh leaf done there.
If your 24 is in good condition, it’s a lot cheaper than buying new also you could go 30kWh or even 40kWh however loss of a bit of boot space on the 40

So if you replace one module how many bars could that replace? How many modules are there? That sounds promising

Nissan are currently (28/1/2020) quoting £17k + VAT to replace the battery in a Leaf. That seems designed to get no sales (which is allegedly how many they get)!

Hi, on the 19th March 2024 Nissan quote me £29,988 for a 62kwh, which sounded criminal.

I’m astonished that in Japan you can get them at those prices. Is the battery chemistry the same as the 62kWh battery? if that’s the case how can Nissan justify just £40,000 for the 62kWh leaf and no Thermal Battery Management. Let’s say the battery is approximately £10,000.
We Brits are being taken advantage of once again.
Don’t forget the investment for tooling and set up has long since been amortised since the leaf is a converted petrol vehicle.

I was considering a used leaf. I have just changed my mind, basically the battery is more than the car.

I will have a good 24kwh battery available for £2.5k shortly due to an upgrade if that’s of interest. Car can still run 85 miles on that one.

It was 12 bars but unfortunately was sold the same day it was taken out. Contact Cleevely Electric Vehicles if you are still looking for one.

It was 12 bars about 86% SOH but unfortunately sold the same day it was removed. Contact Cleevely Electric Vehicles if you are still on the lookout for one since they do swaps & upgrades.

Any idea if and when Nissan will offer this in the UK? Do they offer any battery replacement scheme at all in the UK (new not refabricated)? I read a blog by a couple in the US who did theirs on a fixed price scheme for about 5000 US

It doesn’t look likely the re-fabricated battery option will make it outside Japan, but Nissan do say that in Europe and the UK they will replace individual modules for €465 (around £395) and if the whole battery needs replacing it will need an individual assessment by a dealer.

It seems Nissan has so far got no further than offering the refurb battery programme in Japan.
