Government launching Street Manager for REAL TIME roadworks information

Government launching Street Manager

Government launching Street Manager

The Department for Transport has announced the 2019 launch of Street Manager digital data system to deliver real time roadworks data.

We all use Sat Navs (well, almost all of us) and many of us rely on live traffic information to plan a journey and mitigate delays. But the reported delay data is often out of date and you still find yourself stuck in jams at roadworks your Sat Nav didn’t know existed.

To try and address that issue, the Department for Transport is spending £10 million on launching Street Manager in 2019, a data service which promises to deliver real time data which is consistent, accurate and up to date.

Street Manager isn’t going to be a Government App you can download and use, but it’s being offered free of charge to Sat Nav and map producers, like Waze and Google Maps, with the expectation the data will be ‘pushed’ to motorists in real time.

Roads Minister Jesse Norman said:

Roadworks can often be frustrating for motorists, especially when they cause hold-ups at busy times and delay journeys.

We want to reduce this disruption and delay, and Street Manager is just one of a number of actions we are taking so that local authorities and utility companies can better plan and manage their roadworks.

The data opened up by this new digital service should enable motorists to plan their journeys better, so they can avoid works and get to their destinations more easily.

It’s hoped the new Street Manager service will also allow local authorities to collaborate more effectively on planned disruptions, and the Government is also planning to advise local authorities on lane bidding charges for utility companies and other who want to dig up roads, making it far more cost-effective for roadworks to be done at off-peak times.

It all helps.
