Tesla V3 Superchargers REVEALED – 1,000 miles of electric charge in an hour

Tesla has revealed its V3 version of Superchargers which will deliver 250kW power for up to 1,000 miles of charge in just an hour.

Tesla has been a pioneer for electric cars, but it’s coming under increased pressure from traditional car makers now delivering competitive electric cars. So Tesla is trying to respond.

We’ve already seen huge price cuts for the Tesla Model S and Model X (and for the Model 3 too), and now Tesla is aiming to make its Supercharger network competitive with the 350kW chargers starting to roll out from Ionity.

Tesla hasn’t managed to offer 350kW charge rates, but it is doubling the rate of charge in its V3 supercharger to 250 kW, promising the Model 3 will be able to take 1,000 miles of charge for every hour it’s plugged in.

The new 1MW power cabinets for V3 mean every car plugged-in will get the full 250kW (assuming it can take it), and there’s new software to condition the batteries ahead of a charge. Tesla say the new V3 will cut charging times by 50 per cent, enabling twice as many rapid charges a day.

The existing Supercharger network is also being upgraded from 125kW to 145kW, and Tesla say the Model S and Model X will get software updates soon to allow higher charging rates. But it seems, unlike the Model 3, they will not be able to take the full 250kW charge on offer in V3.

To start with, Tesla are opening a single V3 Supercharger in the Bay Area of San Francisco, but say V3 will start to roll out in Europe by the end of 2019.
