New Peugeot 2008 arrives – with added SUV looks and an ELECTRIC e-2008 too

New Peugeot 2008 arrives

The new Peugeot 2008 is revealed as a smaller take on the 3008 and comes with an e-2008 electric version. But it’s not on sale until 2020.

It’s more than six years since the Peugeot 2008 arrived as Peugeot’s Crossover take on the 208. So it’s high time for a new 2008, and we get that today with the reveal of what looks rather like a shrunken 3008 with a 2008 badge.

Despite a reveal today, it’ll be in to 2020 before the new 2008 actually starts to arrive in UK showrooms, but it looks promising and fit for the fight for the small SUV market against new competition next year, including a new Renault Captur and Nissan Juke.

The new ‘3008’ looks for the 2008 give it a more aggressive stance – more SUV than Crossover this time – with ‘Claw’ LED lights, sharp lines, big bonnet and big wheels. It looks like an SUV from the next segment up, and its new CMP platform means its only 150mm shorter than the 3008.

That creates a bigger interior for the new 2008, with space for real grown-ups in the back and a decent 434-litre boot, and the arrival of Peugeot’s new iCockpit in a higher quality interior with tech like wireless phone charging, Android Auto and Apple Carplay, adaptive Cruise, Lane Departure and auto parking all on offer.

The big under the skin is the e-2008 electric 2008 with 50kWh battery, range of 193 miles and 134bhp. It’s not up there with the sort of range the Kona or Niro offer, but the price point will be lower.

Despite the e-2008’s arrival, Peugeot will still be relying on CIE sales for the 2008, with the excellent .12 litre three-pot available in 99bhp, 128bhp and 153bhp versions and the 99bhp 1.5 litre diesel for those who still want an oil burner. Trim levels will be Active, Allure, GT Line and GT.

With an actual launch for the new 2008 not happening until 2020, we’ll have to wait for pricing and full specs.
