McLaren announces new ULTIMATE Series Roadster
McLaren has announced a new Roadster to slot in to the Ultimate Series bracket – like the Senna and Speedtail – arriving in 2020.
We used to moan that Lamborghini spent more time delivering exorbitantly-priced limited run titivations than developing new cars, and it seems to be a pitch McLaren are mimicking.Whatever ‘new’ car McLaren delivers it’s still the same basic McLaren with a carbon fibre tub and V8 engine bolted in the back, even when it purports to be a McLaren GT.
But McLaren has learnt there’s a healthy market place for cars at a very silly price with a limited run, snapped up by so-called petrolheads who are mainly posers with too much money.
McLaren’s latest wheeze to fleece the daftly wealthy of a few million each is this Ultimate Series Roadster, announced at Pebble Beach and arriving in 2020.
McLaren say it will be priced between the Senna, which has a list price of £750k, and the Speedtail, which costs £2.1 million. A new £1.5 million McLaren Roadster, perhaps?
Moans apart, the image (above) from McLaren (which we’ve played with so you can see more) does look good, even if what lies beneath will be just another take on everything in McLaren’s stable.
McLaren say this Ultimate Roadster (which doesn’t yet have name) isn’t built for the track put for posing on the road, although with an open cockpit we would think the South of France is the only place to play; anywhere north will be too wet, anywhere south too hot.
We are no doubt in for a run of teases and titbits of information on the new McLaren in the coming months before we get to actually see the new McLaren ahead of its 399 car run.
