New Smart EQ Fortwo and Forfour – Smart is now ELECTRIC only

The new Smart EQ Fortwo and Forfour are revealed with an electric-only powertrain, updated technology and new looks differentiating the Fortwo and Forfour.

We had a bit of a tease for the new Smart EQ Fortwo and Forfour models a few days ago, and now the updated models are uncovered as a stop-gap before a new range of Smart cars arrive in a couple of years time.

That means ‘new’ Fortwo and Forfour models with a bit of cosmetic titivation, with a new, lower and larger, honeycomb grille, new Fogs, bigger air ducts, new LED headlights, new bonnet and, at the back, new diffuser, lights and spoiler. 

Inside there’s a re-designed centre console and new 8″ infotainment, which needs your Smartphone linked to perform, and there’s a choice of three trim levels – Advanced, Premium and Exclusive.

What, unfortunately, hasn’t changed much is what’s under the skin.

That means a 17.6kWh battery powering an electric motor and delivering a range of under 100 miles, with up to 79bhp and 118lb/ft of torque getting the Smart to 62mph in 11.6 seconds (12.7 seconds for the ForFour).

Clearly that range is enough for almost everyone’s daily use in the city, which is what the Smart is designed for, and the advantage of such a small battery means it will charge at home in 3.5 hours.

Smart hasn’t announced prices for the updated Smart range – available as ForTwo Coupe and Cabrio and ForFour – but the changes shouldn’t be huge.
