Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion revealed
The electric estate car arrives as Volkswagen reveals the ID. Space Vizzion at the Los Angeles Motor Show, previewing a production model for 2021.
It feels like car makers are intent on throwing electric SUVs at us in droves at the moment, but now Volkswagen is previewing a truly practical electric car with the Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion. The ID. Space Vizzion is just a concept for now, but it previews a production model for 2021 which will deliver an estate car version of the ID. 3 Hatch, an eminently more practical option for anyone who engages their rational brain than an electric SUV.
How much of the look of the ID. Space Vizzion will change before it arrives in VW showrooms it’s hard to say, but to our eyes the sleek body looks perfectly production-ready, although it’s likely to lose stuff like the two-tone paint job and big 22″ wheels, and there will probably be proper door handles too.
The ID. Space Vizzion is the seventh ‘ZZ’ electric concept from VW, built on VW’s new MEB Platform and sporting a powertrain consisting of 82kWh battery and 275bhp at the back – although VW could add another motor at the front for a 4WD production version – and a promised range of nearly 370 miles.
All that gets the ID. Space Vizzion to 72mph in 5.0 seconds, and although doing so will dramatically cut range, refuelling is possible to 80 per cent in around half an hour.
Inside the ID. Space Vizzion is very concepty, but expect the production take to follow where the ID. 3 leads with a simple and effective cabin.
It’s all properly appealing – a perfect family car.
