Hyundai want to bust the top 10 electric car myths

Hyundai wants to bust the top ten electric car myths, including that electric cars aren’t safe in rain and thunder storms.

Electric cars are a long way off being the default car buy, but things are moving quickly in that direction. Well, as quickly as they can when so many drivers harbour misconceptions about EVs.

To try and address the barriers to EV ownership, Hyundai has conducted a poll with OnePoll to find out what the main concerns are about moving in to an electric car. And apart from the usual range anxiety, which is rapidly becoming an obsolete concern, some of them are a bit surprising.

Overall, 22 per cent of those surveyed said they wouldn’t feel safe charging an electric car, and 18 per cent said they didn’t think it safe to drive an EV in a lightening storm (and almost 30 per cent of drivers in London think that), and, amazingly, almost one in eight thought it unsafe to charge their phone in an EV.

Of course, range anxiety was at the top of the tree – concerning 46 per cent of those surveyed – but other concerns included poor performance and using a car wash.

Top 10 Electric Car Myths.

1: Range Anxiety

With even entry-level EVs offering a range of over 100 miles, and many up to 300 miles, there really is no concern when the average daily use is just 20 miles.

2: Nowhere to charge

Apart from the fact many can charge at home, there are now 14,500 public charging points and rapid charging is rolling out quite well at last.

3: Too Expensive.

It’s a valid concern, especially the upfront cost, but improving residuals are making PCP deal attractive, and lower running costs help too.

4: Poor Performance

Many believe EVs will be sluggish, but they’re really not, and the instant torque makes even the low power EVs feel quick off the line.

5: EVs and water don’t mix

Many are concerned about driving in a storm or using a car wash. But EVs are just as safe in these situations as an ICE car.

6: Not enough EV choice

That has been the case, but with new emissions regulations on the horizon car makers are rolling out moer choice all the time.

7: EV batteries add to landfill

Many are concerned that end of life EV batteries will add to the landfill crisis, but they are actually being re-purposed at the end of life of the valuable elements recovered.

8: EVs aren’t safe

EVs are subject to the same safety standards as ICE cars.

9: Breakdown cover for EVs

The majority of breakdown organisations are happy to cover EVs.

10: EVs are no good for petrolheads.

There is some truth to this as EVs don’t give the aural delights an ICE performance car will – and the performance feels a bit less adaptable – but the outright torque makes up for it. Just different.

Up front cost is the issue. As far as range is concerned advising that the average journey is 20 miles has no relevance.
I need a car that can operate locally and also take me further afield as well, right up to a yearly journey of 350 miles each way.
Two cars is an unaffordable option for most people.
