The Audi e-tron quattro concept is heading for the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show as a preview of a production Audi Q6 with an electric drivetrain.
It’s no secret that Audi is planning an electric coupe SUV – the Audi Q6 EV – to take on the Tesla Model X, and now we get a preview of that car with the first images of the Audi e-tron quattro concept which is heading for a debut at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
In terms of design, the e-tron quattro is much as expected (although no doubt exaggerated in this render) with a small greenhouse, sloping roofline and a stance that seems somewhere between the Q7 and the A6 Allroad, complete with butch plastic cladding to make it look more purposeful.
Despite its SUV looks, Audi has managed to make the Q6 to be rather slippery, with a best in segment figure of 0.25 – which augers well for economy and range – and has fitted OLED Matrix Laser OLED lights.
Power comes from three electric motors – one at the front and two at the back – providing all wheel drive for the Q6, with a large bank of lithium-ion batteries installed under the passenger area for a low centre of gravity. Audi reckon the Q6 will have a range of over 300 miles.
Audi has also released a render of the interior (below) on the Q6, which looks interesting but will no doubt be much more practical when the Q6 arrives.
In the e-tron quattro concept it looks to have a full length centre console – so room for just two in the back – with OLED screens front and back taking the place of normal buttons and switches.
The Audi e-tron quattro concept will debut next month in Frankfurt – and we’ll doubtless get a proper reveal before then – but it’s probably going to be a couple of years before we see a production Audi Q6 EV.
