The Audi Q7 e-Tron Plug-in Hybrid will be going on sale in the UK in May 2016, offering a 34 mile EV range – and cost around £65,000.

It’s exactly a year since the new Audi Q7 e-Tron – Audi’s plug-in hybrid take on the new Q7 – debuted at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, and it’s finally going on sale in the UK, in May, at prices around £65,000.

Competition for the Q7 e-Tron is impressive (Volvo XC90 T8 and Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid), and Audi has no doubt pitched its prices to make the Q7 e-Tron appealing, but at £65,000 (a price Audi say is ‘circa’, so might be a bit more or a bit less) the starting point for the Audi is £4.5k more than the entry-level Volvo XC90 T8 Momentum.

The Audi’s combination of a V6 TDI and a 94kW electric motor offers a combined output of 369bhp, official economy of 156.9mpg, 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds and a 34 mile range from it 17.3kWh battery. The Volvo T8, by comparison, comes with 401bhp and can get to 62mph in 5.6 seconds.

Standard equipment for the Q7 e-Tron in the UK will include LED headlights, MMI Nav, digital dashboard, Apple Car Play, Android Auto, Predictive Energy Assistant (which gives feedback on the route ahead) and Active Cruise.

Charging the Audi takes just under five hours from a domestic socket, and Audi are supplying a fast charge cable if you have access.

It’s a decent package (and a great way to cut your BIK costs) but, on the face of it at least, the new Volvo XC90 T8 offers more for less – even if you choose the range-topping Inscription model.

Bottom line is that a diesel hybrid because of its NOx emissions is still dirtier compared to a petrol hybrid. I just think Audi sticking with their diesel strategy is fool hardy. While I have always driven an Audi, my next car will be the XC90 T6 or T8. I have never owned a diesel, and don’t intend to change that.

Couldn’t agree more. And besides, the XC90 is just classier than the Audi, and with a much better interior. Enjoy your new Volvo!
