The Cadillac CTS Wagon. Expect to see the CTS-V Wagon in 2010.
Bob Lutz – the ‘Mouth from GM’ – has said in an interview that there will be an estate version of the mighty CTS-V – the Cadillac CTS-V Wagon.
Bob Lutz does have a big mouth. He is prone to making statements which aren’t really backed by a lot of fact. But he’s also far from stupid, and he knows how to work the media. So it seems extremely likely that his statement to Car & Driver that “…you’ll be able to get the CTS-V any way you want.” is as close as we’ll get to confirmation that GM are going to produce an estate version of the CTS-V.
But it seems likely that there will not just be a CTS-V Wagon but also a CTS-V Coupe. Both of which are enticing prospects, particularly if they reach this side if the pond. The trouble is – for us – that even though the CTS-V comes in at a bargain price is the US – undercutting even the very well-priced Jaguar XKR – it would probably end up costing more by the time it gets here.
That aside, more variants of the CTS-V would be good news for GM. Not in terms of its profitability – the CTS-V is always going to be a relatively small seller – but because it gives Cadillac a halo of performance and ability, something it very much needs as it attempts to rebuild its business.
And the CTS-V is a performance monster. It sports a 6.2 litre V8 producing 556 bhp and 551lb/ft of torque. That big bhp number couple with the enormous wodge of torque pushes the CTS-V to 60 mph in under 4 seconds, which is significantly quicker than any of the competition – M5, E63, RS6 and XFR. So impressive is it that every one of the competition bottled out of Bob Lutz’s CTS-V Challenge in New York recently.
Of course, performance isn’t everything, and the European competition does offer more sophistication. But the power of the CTS-V will find a very ready market – even in Europe.
Expect to see the CTS-V Wagon and CTS-V Coupe turning up in 2010 as 2011 models.
