Back in January, at the time of the Detroit Motor Show, we brought news of a compact VW Roadster concept that was reckoned to be ready for sign off by VW as an Audi and a VW economical, fun little Roadster, along the lines of the old British Sports cars from a previous generation, and akin to the hugely successful Mazda MX5. Not a bloated, gas-guzzling all-out performance car, but one that could merge fun and economy in one great little car.
At the time we reported, we thought thought that Skoda’s image might be a little too down-market still for this little Roadster. We thought it more likely that Audi and VW would be the main producers, and maybe Porsche, as an entry-level model. But Motor Authority seem to think different, and they’ve got a pretty impressive rendering from Schulte Design, who are usually pretty much on the money with these things.
This is a pretty impressive view of what the Skoda Roadster would look like as a nimble, mid-engined Roadster. And it does actually make a lot of sense. Skoda has now moved to a point where it is on a par with parent company VW in the perception of the quality of its cars, and this could move Skoda centre stage; able to be more than just a cheap way to get a VW.
A fair way to go yet before the Bluesport Brothers (from whichever VW/Porsche/Audi/Skoda/SEAT etc stable they appear from) as the cars are unlikely to surface for at least a couple of years. But this looks promising.
