Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo confirms a 599 Roadster, a new Scaglietti, a 458 Italia Spider and no 458 Scuderia
Revealed is too strong a word, because we don’t have a photo of the 599 Roadster. But we do have Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo admitting that a drop top version of the 599 is on the way.
The Ferrari 599 Roadster will be the first open top V12 from Maranello since the 575 Superamerica five years ago. And, like the Superamerica, it will get an evocative name. Luca di Montezemolo says that it will be “… an emotional, romantic name such as Italia or Fiorano”. But what it will be, he didn’t say.
But we won’t have to wait that long to find out. The 599 Roadster is planned for a launch at Pebble Beach in August and there’s zero chance of the name staying under wraps for that long. Any bets on the name?
The 599 Roadster will also get a small power hike – 25bhp – to compensate for the weight gain made by chopping off the roof. No word on price or numbers, but it’s likely to be a limited run with prices nudging up towards £235k.
As an aside to the 599 Roadster, Luca di Montezemolo confirmed that Ferrari are working on a replacement for the 612 Scaglietti and that the 458 Italia Spider is in the works. Interestingly, he said there are no plans for a 458 Scuderia.
Apparently you can’t improve on perfection.
