The new Ford Edge SUV looks like it’s going to be a big hit in the UK as production starts, with 60k potential buyers configuring their Edge.

The new Ford Edge SUV went on sale in the UK in January as Ford bring an SUV bigger than the Kuga to the UK market and, according to Ford, all the signs are the Edge is going to be a big hit with UK car buyers.

Ford has decided that the huge interest from UK car lovers in configuring an Edge on the Ford website is a clear indication of the level of interest, with more than 60,000 jumping online to configure their perfect Edge.

Of those 60k, almost half specced-up a Sport version of the Edge – the range-topping trim – with just 11 per cent choosing to spec up the cheaper Zetec Edge, and over 55 per cent went for the 210PS 2.0 litre diesel engine with PowerShift auto.

We don’t want to rain on Ford’s parade – and the healthy level of interest in the Edge from UK buyers is clearly evident – but online car configurators are a great time waster for petrolheads, and it does seem highly likely the majority who’ve been on the configurator are simply playing.

That said, the Edge is an appealing Ford SUV, and with prices starting from £29,995 it does seem to offer good value, decent spec levels, lots of technology and plenty of options that aren’t stupidly priced.

Let’s hope Ford’s reading of the interest turns in to endless orders for the new Edge.
