Ford Mustang updated for 2018 with MORE power – and LESS
The 2018 Ford Mustang gets a range of updates, including cosmetic tweaks to the exterior and interior, more power for the 5.0 litre V8, and less power for the 2.3 litre EcoBoost.
Ford has increased the power of the Mustang’s 5.0 litre V8, taking it from the current 410bhp to 444bhp, doubtless increasing performance in the process, helped, no doubt, by the arrival of Ford’s 10-speed automatic gearbox.
But even though the power of the V8 Mustang is going up, Ford is cutting the power in the 2.3 litre EcoBoost.
Power drops from the current car’s 313bhp to 286bhp which it seems is down to needing to comply with Euro 6.2 emissions, but Ford say the addition of an overboost means there will be no effect on performance, and that the new 10-speed auto actually means a slight improvement in both economy and performance.
Cosmetic changes include a lower bonnet with integrated air vents, a titivated grille and a re-designed back bumper and diffuser, with quality improvements in the cabin.
New goodies include an (optional) 12″ digital instrument cluster, and Ford has also included stuff like Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Adaptive Cruise, Distance Alert, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keeping Aid in an effort, no doubt, to improve the Mustang’s woeful NCAP safety rating.
The 2018 Ford Mustang will debut this week in Frankfurt, but it’ll probably be next summer before it arrives in the UK.
