Lewis Hamilton managed to convert his pole position at Singapore in to a win for McLaren, but the biggest winner of the day was Jensen Button.
It always looked as if McLaren’s late-season renaissance would continue at Singapore, and world champion Lewis Hamilton didn’t disappoint his team as he drove to his second successive Grand Prix win. But the biggest winner of the day was undoubtedly Jenson Button, as he managed to salvage fifth place and extend his lead over team mate Rubens Barrichello (who finished one place behind Button), despite a poor showing in qualifying and starting 11th on the grid. The biggest losers of the day were probably Red Bull, who failed miserably to take advantage of Button’s poor grid position (and that of Barrichello, who started in 10th after a five place penalty for a new gearbox). Vettel managed to damage his car on the kerbs and acquired a drive-through penalty after crossing the white line exiting the pits. Team mate Webber’s brakes gave up on lap 49 and he went home with nothing to show for all his efforts in Singapore.
It was more of the same this year as last, with the safety car coming out on lap 21 after Sutil attempted a hugely optimistic overtaking manoeuvre. The ensuing mayhem saw Alguersuari drive in to Heidfeld to end both their races.
Timo Glock brought his Toyota home in second to claim eight points, with last year’s winner Alonso in third and Vettel in fourth.
Off to Japan next, with Button needing just five more points to secure this year’s world championship title.
He’s starting to look odd-on.
